It’s a simple plot, and there aren’t that many ‘wow’ moments in the movie, but there are quite a few poker scenes as well as appearances from the likes of Antonio Esfandiari, Phil Laak, and Mike Sexton. Of course, in return for his lessons and putting him in the tournaments, Tommy expects half of Alex’s winnings. The plot revolves around Tommy, an ex-player, trying to teach young Alex tricks and strategy to take on the poker world and make a lot of money in the process. The movie stars Burt Reynolds (Tommy), and Bret Harrison (Alex). You’ll have some fun, and you won’t feel like you wasted a couple of hours of your time as long as you keep your expectations realistic. While it is not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, it is a decent poker flick worth watching if you enjoy the game. The 2008 poker movie Deal is among the more controversial ones in this group.
